2014 MAZDA5 Continues to Put the Fun in Functionality

Offering an unmatched combination of performance, functionality, design and packaging since its inception in 2006, the 2014 Mazda5 works perfectly for families and flawlessly for those with active lifestyles. A new color has been added to help highlight the fluid-motion lines as they move through the sleek sheet metal. The fuel efficient Mazda5 maintains the superior handling characteristics its owners have loved for so long.

“Mazda5 owners expect function and practicality from their vehicles, but also appreciate the dynamic handling and sleek design,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “And with every model year, we always look for ways to further enhance the Mazda5’s versatility and appeal to those with active lifestyles.”

The 2014 Mazda5 continues to incorporate treatments from Mazda’s Nagare “flow” design language which, inspired by the beauty of nature, presents an elegant style not found in any existing vehicle today. It’s an appealing look that draws the eye in from first glance and continues to hold the viewer’s attention through to the vehicle’s taillights.

Mazda5 retains the values that have been part of the vehicle build concept since day one: smart and emotional design; instinctive, intuitive creature comforts; customary Mazda quality; and a superior dynamic driving performance that does not compromise its environmental impact.

Emotional Exterior

Living up to the motto “Elegant Resourcefulness,” the 2014 Mazda5’s styling achieves a higher balance of functionality and design, while at the same time giving it a stylish appeal that is immediately distinguishable from the clunky, box-like designs found on conventional offerings in the market.

The fog lamp bezels were designed to form a continuous line with the side shoulders and wheel arches to present a wide, dynamic image. This blends beautifully with the gentle S-shaped contour established by the sweeping lines off the sides of the front grille and up toward the headlamps. In addition, the mesh pattern surrounding the fog lamps creates a design that flows back toward the rear of the vehicle. The deeply sculpted form of the area around the hood and fog lamps gives the front a firm countenance that emphasizes its athletic, purpose-driven styling.

The sweeping design motif applied to the sides of the body gracefully continues the dynamic flow of the lines from the headlamps and front fenders, and then carries that flow to the rear fenders and rear combination lamps in beautiful fashion. In the same spirit, the rails for the sliding door are blended skillfully with the same character lines.

By connecting the flow from the front and sides through to the rear fenders, rear combination lamps and all the way to the tailgate, Mazda5’s design creates a beautiful and dependable body line. Adding further appeal and lending the rear end a wide, stable look, is the powerful line cut by the prominent rear fender shoulders combined with the placement of the rear combination lamps. The finishing touch is the extended rear quarter and rear window glass panels that completely cover the D-pillar to emphasize the flowing design.

Premium Interior

Treatments adopted from the exterior design language continue to be found throughout the interior, from the lines above the dials and along the instrument panel to the stitch pattern in the seats and the design of the seat fabric. The overall feel established is that of a sporty, high-quality cabin.

The driver-oriented interior positions the peak of the meter hood as the tall point, with all lines cascading from there to comfortably wrap around the driver. The instrument panel flows from the cockpit to the center panel and on to the passenger-side dashboard in a rippling effect that suggests a liquid awareness. The same sentiment continues on through the lines of the seat pattern, connecting seamlessly with the second and third row seats to create a strong sense of harmony throughout the interior.

The cockpit upholds a sporty look that hints at the Mazda5’s ready-for-the-road dynamics, from the look of its twin deep-set gauges to the genuine leather that wraps the steering wheel and gear shift knob. The center panel is fitted with chrome plating and silver-trimmed control knobs that create a look of top quality, all the while emphasizing the stylish design of the Mazda5’s cabin.

Practical Functionality

With an overall length of 180.5 inches, width of 68.9 inches, height of 63.6 inches and sitting on a 108.3-inch wheelbase, the 2014 Mazda5 delivers roomy comfort while being surprisingly compact. The long wheelbase helps give it extraordinary passenger space for its modest external dimensions, and the short front and rear overhangs enable better handling and parking ease. Despite the wheelbase, the Mazda5 features an impressively tight turning circle of 36.7 feet, making it remarkably easy to maneuver in tight situations. With a low drag coefficient of 0.30, the vehicle also is aerodynamically efficient, offering a quiet ride while maximizing fuel economy.

The 2014 Mazda5 continues with a very popular feature from the first generation Mazda5: the extremely practical, simple-to-operate manual sliding side doors. The doors hug the vehicle’s sides when open and create a wide opening for easy ingress and egress to the rear seats – especially for third-row passengers. This creates minimal impact when choosing a parking space because the doors require little side clearance to be opened.

Despite its compact makeup, the Mazda5 features a comfortably spacious cabin. Three features contribute to its roomy interior: a low profile fuel tank, a compact multi-link rear suspension and a stepped floor. The latter permits superb legroom for all – particularly those sitting in the second and third rows. The imaginatively resourceful interior takes convenience and flexibility to a whole new level, and can be configured for two, three, four, five or six passengers and still offer room for their expansive amounts of cargo.

The second row has separate captain’s chairs for added levels of comfort (and to minimize the “he’s touching me” joy when little ones share a bench seat). The seats slide and recline and can be folded flat without needing to remove the headrests. They also feature a one-touch lever that automatically tips the seatback forward and slides the cushion to its front-most position to allow easy access to the third row.

The third row seats are split 50/50, and can be tipped forward individually and folded flat to create an optimized load area, ideal for carrying mountain bikes or bulky sports equipment. With the rear-most seats folded, carrying capacity is a spacious 44.4 cubic feet.

Interior storage space includes an abundance of compartments, including an enormous, illuminated glove box and half-liter-bottle-sized container holders in each front door pocket. Additionally, under-seat storage in the second row seats can be easily accessed by folding the seat bottom cushions forward. The right side second-row seat also offers a fold-out tray with basket to keep safe all the little “souvenirs” that family excursions tend to collect.

The Mazda5 also features “theater-style” rear seating. The stepped floor means each row is mounted a little higher than the one in front to improve visibility for all. The driver, too, benefits from excellent visibility, improving primary safety as well as making driving more enjoyable.

Zoom-Zoom Performance

Mazda’s MZR engine family is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced forms of fuel-efficient, high-energy propulsion. Standard for all Mazda5 models, the MZR 2.5-liter engine produces its maximum output of 157 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and delivers a satisfying 163 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The Mazda5 engine uses a cast aluminum cylinder block and high-strength, thin-walled sleeves as well as compact, lightweight pistons. The flow within the intake valves reduces exhaust resistance while using Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) to deliver optimum intake valve timing whether dawdling in traffic or carving around an on-ramp. Mazda’s Variable Induction System (VIS) also is utilized to improve low- to mid-range torque. The MZR 2.5-liter engine gives a linear feel to acceleration, accurate vehicle response and a light, relaxing driving performance.

The 2014 Mazda5 can be equipped with either a six-speed manual transmission (Sport models only) or a five-speed electronically-controlled automatic with a manual shift mode. When equipped with the manual transmission, the Mazda5 offers a gas price-friendly EPA rating of 21 city/28 highway miles per gallon (mpg). When equipped with the automatic transmission, the vehicle achieves a 22 city/28 highway mpg EPA rating.

A unique Mazda Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) protocol, which has earned high acclaim on the brand’s renowned RX-8 sports car, provides the five-speed automatic transmission with the performance and response that Mazda customers expect. Part-throttle downshifts are delivered in sync with the nudge of the accelerator during passing. When the car is braked aggressively in anticipation of cornering, the transmission also downshifts to add engine braking and to prepare for an expedient exit from the bend. Wide gear-ratio spread assists accelerations from rest while also providing quiet and efficient highway cruising.

Mazda5’s steering system delivers a precise, linear feel thanks in part to Mazda’s Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering (EHPAS) system. Using an electric pump, the system also contributes to improved fuel economy. Rubber couplings added to the steering shaft joints help realize a smooth, linear steering feel. The steering system also includes tilt and telescopic adjustment that lets any member of the family find the most comfortable driving position, regardless of height or build.

Suspension layout for the 2014 Mazda5 uses MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear that employ separate coils and dampers as part of its input separated system. The dampers are a twin-tube type and the rear dampers include integrated rebound springs. The inherent functions of these components earn the suspension high acclaim for delivering superior handling stability.

Well Thought Out, Well Equipped

Available in three trim levels, Mazda5 is offered as an entry-level Sport, feature-full Touring and top-of-the-line Grand Touring. All models offer the versatility, features and style consumers in the market for a multi-activity vehicle want and at a price they can afford. One feature that is sure to offer buyers peace of mind: outside door mirrors with integrated LED turn-signal lamps come standard.

The Mazda5 Sport is well equipped and comes standard with a six-speed manual or available five-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with P205/55R16 all-season tires, power door locks and windows with a driver’s side one-touch up/down feature, power mirrors, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, air conditioning with pollen filter, an AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible audio system with six speakers, auxiliary-audio input and USB connection ports, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, a remote keyless entry system and 50/50-split fold-flat third-row seats.

The Touring trim takes everything already offered on the Sport model and pumps it up a notch. The Mazda5 Touring is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with P205/50R17 all-season tires, sport side-sill extensions, a rear lift gate spoiler, fog lamps, Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio connectivity, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear backup sensors as well as a trip computer.

Moving up to the fully-loaded Grand Touring model adds a power moonroof, leather-trimmed seats with heated front row seats, driver’s seat lumbar support adjustment, xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights with low beam and manual leveling, heated door mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Sirius Satellite Radio with a complimentary four-month subscription and an anti-theft alarm system.

Standard Safety, Security

The 2014 Mazda5 offers a high level of performance and stability as well as a high amount of safety features – standard. All Mazda5 vehicles are equipped with a long list of safety offerings, including six airbags (advanced dual front, front seat-mounted and full-length side curtain), anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) with Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with a Traction Control System (TCS), a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), “Triple H” body construction, side-impact door beams, a “crushable” brake and accelerator pedal assembly, three-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).

Also, all Mazda vehicles come with the Mazda Certified Roadside Assistance Program. Using either the toll-free number or free Mazda Assist app for iOS- and Android-operated mobile devices, owners and their family members can contact roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. In addition, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty includes a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty, which covers every part of the vehicle except those subject to normal wear, a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.

Mazda Named the Most Fuel-Efficient Auto Manufacturer in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Report

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted in their most recent Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends report that Mazda Motor Corporation is the most fuel-efficient auto manufacturer in the U.S.  With the highest fleet-wide adjusted fuel economy performance of 27.1 miles per gallon (MPG), and the lowest CO2 emissions of 328, Mazda led the chart for model year (MY) 2012.

While still retaining the fun-to-drive characteristics for which Mazda is known, the company had the second largest increase (2.1 MPG) in the report over their MY 2011 MPG (25.0). Mazda has achieved the highest fuel efficiency of any other mainstream automotive manufacturer in the industry, without offering a hybrid or electric vehicle.   Mazda's unique SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY has made this level of efficiency possible.  SKYACTIV is a suite of component and engineering technologies that incorporate ultra-high compression ratio gasoline engines, super-efficient manual and automatic transmissions, lightweight chassis and body components, reduced rolling resistance and low-drag body styling.

"Mazda has long had a history of doing things differently, and SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is no exception," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. "While other manufacturers have turned their attention to hybrids and electric cars, we chose to focus on perfecting the base technology used in more than 90 percent of the cars and SUVs sold today: the internal combustion engine. Through analyzing and refining this technology, as well as every other component in a modern automobile, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel economy in nearly every segment it competes in, and bring that technology – at an affordable price – to every customer."

Mazda's SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY brought the company to the forefront of fuel efficiency through such vehicles as the all-new 2014 Mazda3, the 2014 Mazda6, and the 2014 CX-5. Mazda3 reaches near best-in-class fuel economy with 41 highway MPG when equipped with the i-ELOOP energy regeneration system. Mazda6 equipped with i-ELOOP achieves class- leading fuel economy with 40 highway MPG. At 35 MPG, CX-5 still retains the title of the highest highway MPG of any SUV in North America, including hybrids.

All-new from the ground up, the 2014 Mazda3 was today named "Car of the Year" by the editors of AutoGuide.com. One of five finalists, which also included the new 2014 Mazda6 midsize sedan, the Mazda3 compact car is the second vehicle to earn this distinction.

This redesigned, third-generation 2014 model features not only the Mazda-developed SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY and emotive character lines of the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language but also all-new Mazda systems such as i-ACTIVSENSE, a suite of active-safety pre-crash detection systems, and MAZDA CONNECT™, a next-generation driving-focused in-vehicle connectivity system that also features an innovative Active Driving Display.

"We truly put our best foot forward with the all-new 2014 Mazda3, not only to be competitive within its class but to be the vehicle that consumers have asked for," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).  "Never one to shy away from dynamic handling, this all-new Mazda3 also is value-minded, safety-oriented and technology-driven.  Our best-selling vehicle worldwide should feature the best of what Mazda has to offer as well as give hints as to what's to come not just for the model lineup but for the brand as a whole."

The five finalists for the AutoGuide.com Car of the Year Award were chosen from among all-new cars introduced this year as the stand-outs in their respective segments.  The five segments are Compact Car, Mid-Size Sedan, Full-Size Sedan, Compact Luxury and Mid-Size Luxury.  This is the second year the award has been presented.

"Combining attractive styling inside and out, with impressive features in versatile packaging, the 2014 Mazda3 is also efficient and fun to drive," said Colum Wood, editorial director, AutoGuide.com.  "It's not that the Mazda3 is a great compact car; it's simply a great car, period."

Available in two body styles, pricing for the 2014 starts at $16,945 MSRP for four-door models and $18,945 MSRP for the five-door.  With a choice of two engines, the standard SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, and can be paired with either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic.  Offering one of the best fuel economy numbers in its class, four-door models achieve an EPA-estimated 41 highway mpg while five-doors are rated at 40 highway mpg, regardless of transmission choice.

The 2014 Mazda6 maintains the brand's Zoom-Zoom pedigree while strongly making a case as the alternative-to-premium flagship mid-size sedan.  With its grin-inducing driving dynamics, chiseled-chin design, award-winning safety and best-in-class highway fuel economy (40 mpg3), happiness comes standard with this family four-door.  Starting at $20,990 MSRP, Mazda6 is currently fitted with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5L which can be paired with either a manual or automatic transmission.  Although not available at launch, the SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine will make its U.S. debut in late spring of 2014.

Summary of major exhibits
Mazda Axela
Featuring i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies and a new car connectivity system called Mazda Connect,*3 the Axela is the most recent Mazda model to be fully redesigned. With the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies and KODO design, the all-new Axela incorporates Mazda's latest technologies and trademark driving pleasure. The company will offer the model with three different powertrain options (gasoline, diesel and hybrid) making it the first Japanese maker to do so in the Japanese market. At the Tokyo Motor Show, with the addition of the CNG concept model, the new Axela is being offered as "multi-solution" to the diverse needs of customers around the world.
  • SKYACTIV-G 2.0/1.5-liter gasoline engine
The 2.0-liter engine is paired with a 4-2-1 exhaust system which contributes to the combustion efficiency of this high compression engine. Compared to the previous model with a 4-1 exhaust system (FWD Sport with automatic transmission under JC08 test mode) it offers more torque and approximately 9 percent improved fuel economy. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine model offers greatly increased torque and approximately 26 percent improved fuel economy (comparing FWD sedan with automatic transmission under JC08 test mode).
  • SKYACTIV-HYBRID
The hybrid models pairs an electric motor with a specially-designed 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine. It realizes both exhilarating driving performance and outstanding fuel economy performance of 30.8 km/L under JC08 test mode.
  • SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter diesel engine
The diesel engine model offers torque comparable to a 4.0-liter V8 gasoline engine while meeting Japan's Post-New Long-Term regulations without the need for expensive NOx aftertreatment systems.
  • Mazda3 SKYACTIV-CNG Concept (reference exhibit)
Demand for CNG-powered vehicles is increasing all over the world and the SKYACTIV-CNG Concept adopts a dual fuel system that runs on both gasoline and CNG. CNG engines must burn fuel at high pressure and because the SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine already achieves a high compression ratio it can easily be modified for CNG with only minor modifications. Vehicles with CNG engines reduce emissions by about 20 percent compared to those with gasoline engines of the same displacement. Mazda proposes the Mazda3 SKYACTIV-CNG Concept as a potential way to offer driving pleasure to even more customers around the world while reducing impact on the environment at the same time.

This crossover SUV was the first of Mazda's new-generation products incorporating both SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO design. With its bold and dynamic design, responsive driving performance, outstanding environmental and safety performance, and packaging that ensures a comfortable and enjoyable ride for all onboard, it is not surprising that the CX-5 is winning awards in markets around the world. In addition to being named Japan Car of the Year 2012-2013, the model was the best-selling SUV in the country in 2012.*4

Mazda Atenza
Sporty and refined in both performance and looks, Mazda's flagship also offers the highest level of safety and environmental performance. From the i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system to the i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies, the Atenza offers the very best of Mazda's engineering and craftsmanship.

Mazda Official Vehicle Partner for Las Vegas Rock n Roll Marathon & 1/2 Marathon

IRVINE, Calif. (November 14, 2013) Mazda is excited to bring its partnership with the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon series as the “Official Vehicle” sponsor to Las Vegas. Racers will first see Mazda at the Health & Fitness Expo Friday and Saturday November 15 & 16 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and then again on Sunday’s race day in the Starting Line Village.

The sponsorship rolls into Las Vegas this weekend at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Health Expo (Nov. 15-16), where Marathon Expo attendees can visit the Mazda display to have their photo taken at the SpeedCam photo booth, refuel at the Mazda Fueling Station with free food and beverages, and share stories of personal inspiration and motivation at the interactive #GAMECHANGER wall. On November 17, at the marathon, runners and supporters can stop by the Mazda Creation Station at the Start Line Village to pre-select a customized event t-shirt.

“Mazda is proud to support the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and its participants,” said Russell Wager, Vice President of Marketing for MNAO. “Marathon runners who push their bodies to the limit for a good cause are true Game Changers. They embody Mazda’s brand values to excel beyond what is possible.”

Sponsorship activities include free food and beverages, screen-printed t-shirts, and ride-and- drive opportunities for marathon participants and supporters at each event. Mazda’s sponsorship continues at the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon & Half Marathon (Jan. 17-19, 2014).

“Partnering with Mazda was a natural fit given our brands share a passion for performance and dedication to developing innovative ways to engage consumers through unforgettable event experiences,” said David O’Connell, VP Sponsorship Sales of Competitor Group, operator of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “We look forward to providing Mazda with a fully integrated event platform for the brand to engage with affluent athletes across the country.”

In addition to providing onsite activities, “Team Mazda” runners will participate in each Mazda sponsored Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. A full list of Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon cities and dates is available online at www.runrocknroll.com.

Organized by Competitor Group, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series is the 'World's Largest Running Series' with more than 500,000 runners taking part in events around the world every year. Started in 1998, the simple idea of making running fun has transformed the U.S. running landscape by infusing the course with live bands, cheer teams and entertaining water stations, creating a block-party atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. Today, the series of marathons and half-marathons has spread to more than 32 destination cities, drawing visitors from around the world.
